Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon
Ken Dunn has been Consultant Plastic Surgeon surgery since 1996. His NHS practice is based at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester one of the largest teaching hospitals within the UK, with Honorary appointment to Manchester Children’s Hospital. Particular areas of interest lie in the organisation and funding of services and clinically in the management of wounds, scars and amputation stump problems.
Ken Dunn specialises in complex wound and lower limb problems including urogenital reconstruction. He also brings his experience of post burn injury scarring and reconstruction to other areas of scar management.

Ken Dunn initially trained in London and was a trainee surgeon in a number of burns and plastic surgery units in England, including East Grinstead, the Accident Hospital in Birmingham and the Odstock Unit in Salisbury. He has been a Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon in Manchester, England from 1996 and is Director of the Manchester Burns Service.
He is a past Chairman of the British Burn Association, and member of the Prevention Committees of the EBA, BBA and ISBI. He has a past member of Council of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons (now called the British Association of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeons). He is currently the Medical Director of the International Burn Injury Database (iBID: www.ibidb.org).
Early in his career he developed an interest in the organisation and provision of burn care in the UK and in the epidemiology of burn injury. He now represents the burn care community on the Board of the UK Trauma Audit and Research Network Board (UK TARN), and the UK National Health Service Information Centre. He chaired the National Burn Care Review Committee (1997-2001) and authored the report published in March 2001. Subsequently he has represented the burn care community to the National Burn Care Group (www.nbcg.nhs.uk). He launched the iBID in 2005, which is designed to collect burn injury data in a uniform manner to allow longitudinal analysis of burn injury causation and care, with a view to supporting injury prevention efforts, as well as modelling burn care provision.
Within his clinical practice, he runs the adult burn service at Wythenshawe Hospital and he supports the regional lower limb prosthetic service in South Manchester by way of a regular combined clinics with rehabilitation specialists. Bringing the techniques of plastic surgery concerning wound management and complex soft tissue surgery, he has revised a large number of lower limb stump problems in a collaborative effort with the rehabilitation team to maximise the mobility potential of lower limb amputees. In 2007 this has extended into providing advice on complex problems presenting to PACE (www.pacerehab.com) an organisation that supports athletes with amputations. Revision surgery has so far been successfully undertaken for patients from a wide geographical area.
