Anne Brain
Qualifying from the Royal Free Hospital London Anne undertook a broad training in general surgery in the major London teaching hospitals. Her particular interests include cosmetic breast surgery (augmentation/reduction/mastopexy) correction of breast asymmetry), abdominoplasty, facelift and eyelid surgery.
Her post fellowship training in Plastic Surgery was undertaken at Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton, St Andrews Hospital Billericay (now in Chelmsford) & The Royal Marsden Hospital London before moving to Manchester as a senior trainee. A travelling fellowship visiting major plastic surgery centres around the world, which specialised in micro-surgery, breast reconstruction & head and neck reconstruction completed her training.
Anne took up her Consultant post in Manchester in 1991 specialising in surgical oncology & microsurgical reconstructions for head & neck surgery and developed the provision of breast reconstruction for the Manchester unit specialising in autologous micro surgical techniques. In 1996 she was a founder member of the multidisciplinary team treating patients with a family history of breast cancer. The Manchester centre now has one of the largest patient cohorts in the uk. The group published the outcomes & protocols, which have become the national gold standard of care.
Her National commitments included representing of BAPS (British Association of Plastic Surgery) as the first interface specialty member for the breast section of BASO (British Association of Surgical Oncology). She was the regional advisor for plastic surgery for the North West & is now a College Assessor.
Anne was a member of the organising committee for the first round of the national educational courses in plastic surgery. She has lectured on breast reconstruction at major national meetings including “real time video link’ demonstration of autologous breast reconstruction. She plays an active role in the training of plastic surgery trainees and medical students.
In parallel to her NHS practise she developed a thriving private practice with over 18 years experience working from the Alexandra Hospital in Cheshire. Her particular interests include cosmetic breast surgery (augmentation/reduction/mastopexy) correction of breast asymmetry), abdominoplasty, facelift and eyelid surgery.
She is now bringing this wealth of experience to The Nuffield Hospital in Taunton having relocated to the south west after her retirement from the nhs.
